A PAIR of morbidly obese sisters, who have a combined weight of 1000lbs are desperately trying to slim down in order to qualify for life-saving bariatric surgery.
Amy and Tammy Slaton, from Kentucky, appear in TLC’s new six-part series 1000-lb Sisters which will hit our screens on New Year’s Day.
Tipping the scales at 406lbs (29st) is Amy, 31, while her sister Tammy, 32, is the heavier of the two at 605lbs (43st).
Amy is desperate to start a family with her husband but is struggling to conceive, People reports, whereas Tammy’s weight has rendered her virtually immobile.
She was forced to move in with Amy after a stint in hospital and now requires assistance with the simplest of tasks.
Determined to turn their lives around, the two sisters have embarked on a weight loss journey together in order to qualify for bariatric surgery.
The surgery usually involves making your stomach smaller, allowing you to eat and drink less but feel fuller.
Speaking in a teaser clip from the show, Amy says: “Between the two of us me and Tammy probably weigh at least a 1000lbs.
“In order to get approved for surgery we need to lose a lot of weight. I think it’s going to be hard because we both get grumpy if we don’t eat.”
The clip goes on to show the extent of the struggles the women have in day to day life with Tammy reduced to tears during a walk, where she requires a zimmer frame, after taking just a few steps from the car.
Despite their mum’s doubts, admitting she thinks her daughters will “chicken out” they set out throwing out their junk food including an enormous sausage they refer to as “big daddy.”
But it isn’t long before the sister’s patience begins to waiver.
“I don’t want to live off frickin’ salad like y’all want me to” Tammy protests.
She later accuses Amy of trying to kick her out of her house.
She responds: “It will be better for us to get separated for a little bit. We started this journey together but there’s only so much one person can take.”
After accusing Tammy of “not trying at all”, Amy and Tammy visit their doctor who appears to have similar concerns.
“I’m ready to cancel the surgery” he tells them.
“I don’t see us going forward with it with the progress that you’re making right now.”
To follow Amy and Tammy’s journey tune in to 1000-lb sister on TLC, New Year’s Day (time tbc).
