Former New York Mets GM Steve Phillips, currently an ESPN analyst, has found himself in the middle of a media sex scandal. In very David Letterman fashion, he has reportedly been engaging in a steamy affair with 22-year-old ESPN production assistant Brooke Hundley.
The young woman apparently became enraged when he broke things off and decided to get some revenge. Brooke made phone calls and delivered a letter to Steve’s wife Marni Phillips, detailing the extra-marital relationship. Then the distraught Hundley accidentally crashed her car into a stone column while trying to make a quick getaway after dropping off the letter at the Phillips residence in Wilton, CT.
According to Steve Phillips, the woman became “obsessive and delusional” after he broke up with her. In a police statement he told officers, “I have extreme concerns about the health and safety of my kids and myself.”
As might be expected, Marni Phillips, 40, has filed for divorce. The couple have four sons, including a 16-year-old who may have been contacted by Hundley through Facebook. It appears she posed as a classmate and used an ESPN computer to converse with the boy on the social website.
Phillips, 46, has been a regular on Baseball Tonight and SportsCenter, and is also an analyst on Monday Night Baseball. ESPN has suspended Phillips for one week over the scandal. He has reportedly followed up that sanction with a personal leave of absence.
